"No temptation has overtaken you which is noy common to all, but God is faithful and will not allow us to be tested beyond what we are able to bear, but with the temptation he will provide the way of escape that we may be able to bear it."

It is so easy for us to think that we are on the wrong road when we are flooded with temptations. This may be because many of us do not seem to be able to differentiate between temptation and sin, equating them both, even maybe seeing temptation as a punishment or consequence of not walking with our God.

We seem to forget the story of Job’s life and get caught up in his remarkable patience, rather than seeing what the Lord was doing in him, using Satan as a refining fire to bring the dross of self righteousness to the surface of his mind. We see the results of this great refining work in the last chapter of that book.

We read in 1Peter 4:12 “Do not be surprised at the fiery ordeal which comes upon you to prove you, as though something strange were happening, but rejoice in so far as you share the sufferings of Christ, that you may rejoice and be glad when his glory is revealed.” 

It is easy to forget during those times of severe trials and temptations that the Lord Jesus went through those kind of times himself. Remember his forty days in the wilderness as he was tempted by the devil? Remember Matt 4:3-10 when Satan tried to get him to turn stones into bread, tried to get him to throw himself from the temple pinnacle, and offered him all the glory and riches of the kingdoms of the earth if he would worship him? Do we forget the final word of that whole incident which is recorded for us in Luke 4:13, “When the devil had finished every temptation he left him (Jesus) UNTIL A MORE OPPORTUNE TIME?”
