“Thus says the Lord, “Stand by the roads, look and ask for the ancient paths where the good way is and walk in it and you will find rest for your souls”, but the people said, “We will not walk in it”.What a powerfully confronting scripture that is! The directive is so simple, STAND (let your mind be still, don’t try to figure it out for yourself), LOOK and ASK for the ancient paths. But who do we ask, and what is that ancient path? In today’s churches there are many experts preaching different variations of the truth, and this can be very confusing for us. But by God’s grace I have learned to look to and ask the God and Father of the Lord Jesus for the wisdom I need to not be distracted or misdirected by anything that is not of his Spirit of Truth, the Spirit of his Son. So I continually look to his word asking him on the basis of what I read there to teach me, and he has answered, making it very clear that the ancient, unchanging path is the one laid out for us in the book of his word, the bible, “Your word is forever firmly fixed in the heavens,” (Psalms 119:89) and shown to us in practice by the Word become flesh.
I urge you to do the same, looking to and trusting in Jesus, the Pioneer and Perfector of the faith which we have received by the grace of our God, and to his Spirit dwelling in us, who empowers us to walk in that ancient path, reminding us that we cannot do so in our own strength. It is then, and only then, in this place of complete trust in him, that we will find rest for our souls; the rest all mankind craves for.
Remember James 1:5-8, “If anyone lacks wisdom, let him ask the Father who gives to all generously and without reproach, and it will be given to him. But let him ask in faith, without doubting, for he who doubts is like a wave of the sea driven and tossed by the wind. Such a double minded person, unstable in all his ways, must not expect to receive anything from the Lord.”
How terrible it would be if we were to be found among those who say, “We will not walk in it!”
