“He who believes in the Son has eternal life. He who does not OBEY the Son shall not see life but the wrath of God rests on him.”So often we hear of the vital importance of faith in our God’s Word as shown in his Son, Jesus, and it is right and good that we take to heart this very precious fact. However, faith in God’s word is only the doorway which is meant to allow us to enter a life of empowerment which enables us to walk in obedience to that word in every area of our lives; for it is only as we live such a life that we will be able to experience what the apostle Peter was talking about when he said to Jesus in John 6:69, “We have believed and have come to know that you are the Holy One of God.”
Remember, Jesus has told us many times that our love for him must be be shown by our obedience to his word, not just by how we feel, though of course real love will always generate very deep emotions. He said, “If you love me, you will keep my commandments, and I will ask the Father and he will give you another Counsellor, to be with you for ever.” (John 14:15-16) Again in John 14:21 he said, “He who has my commandment and keeps them, he it is who loves me, and he who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I will love him and manifest myself to him.” Once more in John 14:23 he said, “If you love me, you will keep my word, and my Father will love you, and we will come to you and make our home with you.” One last sobering thought, “He who believes in the Son has eternal life. He who does not OBEY the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God rests on him.” (John 3;36) Clearly, the Lord Jesus’ definition of true love and faith is a simple obedience to his word, based on complete trust, which results in him and the Father loving us, with him revealing himself to us, and in him giving us God’s Holy Spirit. (Acts 5:32) From personal experience, all of this is done by him in a most intimate, loving way. WHAT A SAVIOUR! |
